Upgrading my Phone

HTC Touch ProAfter I destroyed my phone in the washing machine last year, I’ve been using a really old very outdated phone, whose battery is now dying, and it is time to upgrade (contract over too). I’ve been salivating over the new HTC Touch models and I just confirmed with an Alltel representative that Alltel is actually getting the HTC Touch Pro. There is no official date yet but it is coming soon.

After Vista

Windows Vista has many new nice features but it faces severe criticism and omitted several announced high profile features such as WinFS and now it seems that the next Windows (Windows 7) will be out next year.

IMHO, because of Vistas failure and everybody wanting XP, maybe Microsoft should hire the guy who made this - BricoPack Vista Inspirat Ultimate 2 and make XP + BricoPack + a few of Vistas good features the next Windows. Personally I’ve not tried Vista because none of the computers I own are even “Vista Capable”, forget Premium ready and XP runs just fine on them. My Computer at Work says “Vista Capable” (but was ordered with XP and I do have the option to upgrade to Vista) but our internal processes are not Vista ready yet and a majority of our users are currently being upgraded from 2000 to XP!

Giving Milan another try, New Thai coming up in Barracks Rd.

You all know what I think of Indian Restaurants in Charlottesville but since Milan has a new chef from when we last visited, we thought we’d give the place another try and to summarize the experience - nothing has changed.

We went for the lunch buffet on a saturday. Only one dish amongst all the vegetarian food stood out - an eggplant dish, which too I would call good - nothing exceptional. The rest were mediocre curries. Even Chana (chick peas), which is really hard to get wrong was just ok. I can’t say about the chicken, but Parchayi definitely is not visiting the place again for a long time.

All in all, I’d say stick with Just Curry, which now has two locations, in place of Mesob at the Corner and on The Downtown mall.

I heard a few days back that Casella’s at Barracks Rd is being replaced by a new Thai place. Will report on that when it opens. My favorites still are Lemongrass and Thai 99. I’ve tried several times to try to get the chef at Lemongrass to tell us what goes in his Spicy Lemongrass Tofu, but he is tight lipped about it and the only clues he will give us is that it is a Thai-Vietnamese combination dish which has an Indian influence. I’m willing to offer a free 20$ gift certificate or 20$ by paypal if you can reverse engineer that dish for us.

New iBookDB business cards

PrintingForLess
My original iBookDB business cards were printed by PrintingForLess and they did such a great job then that I didn’t even bother to look elsewhere this time. I made my file yesterday and I just got a proof from them today. I have never come across a company so friendly with such great customer service. They helped me correct the colors on my card so that they look exactly like I want them after the RGB-CMYK conversion (and they did this the last time too). Their card stock is excellent and their prices are so good you won’t even feel like looking anywhere else.

After I approved my proof, I got the option to add aqueous coating to my 1000 business cards for only $5, so I gave them a call and asked about the benefits and I was told that all the coating does is make the cards more durable - it makes no difference to the way the card looks and while on the phone I also got some good tips on making my card design fonts better. There was no hard sell to get the coating and the decision was left to me. It was only 5$ and I was told it does not add any significant thickness to the cards so I did end up getting it.

More later when I actually get the cards.

Google Chrome First Impressions

I just installed Chrome and really like it! It is simple maximizes, screen real estate - no title bar, no status bar, no menus. Just tabs at the top, followed by an address/search bar followed by the webpage. The other thing I noticed was the speed. Chrome is just blindingly fast. It’s even faster than Opera! (don’t talk to me about Safari on Windows because that is just crap with ugly blurry fonts and mismatched macy interface - nope I refuse to use that piece of junk)

However there are some things left to be desired. Mouse gestures would be nice. I have strokeit installed and basic gestures like back and forward work but new tab etc. would be nice. Also, the search/address bar needs to be more intuitive like Opera, which tries to go to www.addressbartext.com/net/org/edu if you enter a single word and searches if you enter multiple words. Also some sort of progress bar would be nice. Multi monitor support would be nice too (the missing title bar confuses the nvidia driver and the multi-monitor options do not show up).

Next thing that would be nice is a linux version, Opera on linux is very buggy and chrome would be welcome. I’m going to try it later in wine and see how that turns out.
