MSI Wind 3 Cell, now at Newegg

I’ve been following the MSI wind closely and finally the 3 Cell is available at Newegg and in stock. I’m still waiting for the 6 Cell though. Newegg is charging 499 for the 3 Cell, which is 20$ more than the MSI price of $479! Amazon has also upped the 3 Cell price to $499!!

Anyway, click here to buy the Wind from Newegg.

Strange Adsense Threats - Switch to YPN??

Here is an email I received from Adsense today:

Hello,

While reviewing your account, we noticed that you are currently displaying Google ads in a manner that is not compliant with our policies. For instance, we found violations of AdSense policies on pages such as http://www.ibookdb.net/book/78456.

As stated in our program policies, AdSense publishers are not permitted to place Google ads on pages with adult or mature content.

Please make any necessary changes to your web pages in the next 3 business days. We also suggest that you take the time to review our program policies (https://www.google.com/adsense/policies) to ensure that all of your other pages are in compliance.

Once you update your site, we will automatically detect the changes and ad serving will not be affected. If you choose not to make the changes to your account within the next three days, your account will remain active but you will no longer be able to display ads on the site. Please note, however, that we may disable your account if further violations are found in the future.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team

As soon as I got this email I removed all Adsense ads from ibookdb and replaced them with YPN because currently I have no means of turining off a particular ad for a particular page and I can’t ensure that I find all adult books on ibookdb reliably and accurately.

Also, this same book is displayed on many other sites with Adsense showing on the side, so I emailed Adsense support with links to other sites as proof. Some of these other sites are a lot larger than ibookdb, so I’m hoping that Adsense will just let me use those ads because after all the adult content is in the book, a limited preview of which is available to anyone at Google Books, and not on ibookdb.

Do American votes really matter?

From the appearance of things it seems that Americans don’t really care about their votes. The fancy-shmancy Electronic voting machines used in the US have been proven to be insecure and unrealiable. They are known to count votes wrongly, fail to operate and are vulnerable to many different forms of attack. The company that makes these machines claims that it is because the the government does not want to spend enough money to make the machines secure and reliable like banks make their ATMs.

However a comparison with India’s voting machines (from 2004 - since then Diebold Voting Machines changed its name to Premier to distance its ATM and voting businesses but still makes the same crap voting machine) shows that voting machines need not be unneccesarily complex and difficult to operate or run. Also there is no oversight on the machines at all. A private corporation writes all the software that runs on voting machines and that code is not made available even to the government or the political parties for testing or inspection of any kind and there are no proper regulations that it has to meet. How much America cares about the fairness of the elections can be easily told from this comparison of regulations on gambling machines vs. voting machines

So does it really matter if you vote in America? Maybe if you trust Diebold not to rig the machines and all the smart hackers in the world not to hack the machines.

Ubuntu Gutsy Screenshot

Finally I’m mostly done installing stuff and here is a screenshot of my Ubuntu System. Check out the network manager at the bottom right, the cool applets on the right (gdesklets). The picture of the turtle is an unprocessed picture I took in Hawaii using my S8000FD.

So far Ubuntu has detected all the hardware on the laptop correctly, hibernation is working. Restricted (non-free as in freedom) drivers were automatically used wherever required, my Windows drives were automatically mounted. The only thing so far not working for me is enabling compiz-fusion. I tried messing with the drivers and Ubuntu always loaded the graphical interface (in low graphics mode) even when I messed up the settings. Now I’m waiting until April for Hardy (8.04) in April hoping finally for compiz to work.

I tested DVD movies and a couple of downloaded ones and VLC was able to play everything. It took me some hunting to get the movies to show up on my projector but that qualifies for a separate post.

Brilliance.com Review and Coupons

I recently ordered a ring for Parchayi from Brilliance.com. I looked around and didn’t find many reviews of the site and most reviews were positive but there were some negative reviews. However, after our diamond search we found that Brilliance prices were unbeatable so we decide to buy from them anyway.

We placed our order online only to learn next day that the diamond we selected was out of stock!! This was exactly what some of the reviews said. Anyway after some furious phone calls to Brilliance and talking to Jonathan (ext. 105), he promised to find us a better diamond for a similar price. And they did. They found a bigger diamond which was only $100 more than the one we selected. I was hoping they would match the price with the one we selected but after a lot of bargaining, they met me midway and gave me 50$ off. This was in addition to the coupon discount.

The order arrived one day earlier than expected and the packaging was excellent, so was the diamond. All in all the shopping experience with them was excellent except for the initial out of stock diamond. And their prices cannot be beat and they have a very large selection. Seriously. Compare them with any other online diamond store. I did. They also provide a free appraisal (most sites do but some charge extra for this) and sent a copy of the appraisal to our insurance company so the ring was insured as soon as we got it.

Here are some coupons you can use:

Green Power Using Companies

Today Intel announced that it became the largest consumer of green energy. I had heard that PepsiCo used 100% green energy and was actually surprised that Intel uses more energy than Pepsi. Looking at the EPA website, it turns out that only 46% of Intel’s power comes from green sources! Comparing then in number of employees, Intel has around 86000 and PepsiCo, around 168000. So Intel basically just runs a power hungry business. Take the case of Pepsi, not only is the parent company a 100% green energy user, but it all its individual bottling companies are also 100% green.

Here is EPA’s list of companies that use 100% or more green energy. How you ask, can a company use more than 100% green energy?? The answer lies in buying more green energy credits than power you consume. So you basically pay the difference in cost of non-green and green energy for somebody else who you don’t know.

You can go green too. Just call your power company for details
